5 things you should know about Glenfiddich

Welcome to our first ever Wholly Spirits Featured Brand post! For this first instalment, we feature Glenfiddich, a brand we are quite fond of, and which also happens to be one of the featured brands for our September Real Deals promotion!

Believe it or not, Glenfiddich is a brand that is closely tied to the very origins of Wholly Spirits. It was during the Glenfiddich Valley Of the Dear event in 2015 that our founders met and where the first seeds of a company that would redefine spirits in Malaysia were sowed. One year later, Wholly Spirits was formed, and the rest is history!

1. Glenfiddich means “The Valley Of The Deer”

Ever wondered why so many Scotch brand names start with ‘Glen’? Well, the word ‘Glen’ actually means ‘valley’ in Scottish Gaelic, and in Glenfiddich’s case, it means ‘Valley Of the Deer’. Established by William Grant in 1876, the distillery itself is located by the River Fiddich, in the town of Dufftown within the Speyside region.

 

2. Glenfiddich kickstarted the modern single malt category

Glenfiddich were responsible for kickstarting the single malt revolution in 1963. At the time, most distilleries made single malt whisky for the sole purpose of blending, but Glenfiddich were the first ones to actually started selling single malt whiskies by a large volume. In short, they were the ones who pretty much created the modern single malt whisky category that we know today.

 

3. Glenfiddich is THE top-selling single malt in the world

Since it started the single malt whisky movement, Glenfiddich has held the title of the world’s top-selling single malt brand for much of this period. In fact, it has been reported that Glenfiddich accounts for over 30% of all single malt sales worldwide, and is sold in over 180 countries. Now those are really impressive stats!

4. Glenfiddich is still proudly family-owned

Since it was founded in 1876, the distillery has always been owned by the Grant family, unlike many other distilleries these days, which are owned by giant conglomerates. This has allowed it to innovate and market its whiskies easily – case in point: they were also the first ones to start packaging their bottles in the tubes and boxes that are the norm amongst whiskies these days.

 

5. Glenfiddich recently got a new look

The distillery recently updated the packaging of their whiskies, and we have to say, we’re really loving the fresh new look! While the labels have changed, the whiskies still come in the distillery’s signature triangular bottles. The triangular bottle was designed in 1956 by Hans Schleger, a world-famous modernist, and was first used in 1961 for the Glenfiddich Straight Malt expression.
