24 Jul Wholly Molly Fact #11: Happy Daiquiri Day!
Happy Daiquiri Day! Here’s A Wholly Molly Fact, on this classic rum drink!
Did you know that the daiquiri is actually named after a Cuban mine? It was created by an American engineer named Jennings Cox, who was a supervisor at a mining operation in a Cuban village called Daiquiri in 1898.
Made with white rum, lime juice and sugar, this is a simple drink that is easy to make but hard to perfect. For an excellent twist on the drink, try it with Diplomatico Planas. The rich creaminess of the Planas goes really really well in a daiquiri, and the 47% ABV also gives the drink quite a good kick.
Like the mojito, the daiquiri was a favourite drink of famous writer Ernest Hemingway, who once said of the two drinks: “My mojito in the Bodeguita del Medio and my daiquiri in the Floridita.”
